Alain Sournia, phycologist and philosopher passed away a few days ago.  He was best known among phycologists for his work on dinoflagellate taxonomy, circadian rhythms and coral reef ecosystems.  He also authored the much used “Phytoplankton Manual” published in 1978 as well as three volumes of the “Manuel du Phytoplancton”.  In his later career he devoted himself to science administration and after his retirement authored a number of books on philosophy.
